The Pottingshed Spa and Shedhead

I was kindly invited to visit The Pottingshed Spa and Shedhead Spa at Redbrick Mills, Batley to see their new hair salon and try some of the treatments they offer. I was very excited as both spa’s are owned by Sam Pearce who also runs Eastthorpe Hall at Mirfield and you might have already read my reviews on that ( it is my all time favourite spa http://mybeautyjournal.co.uk/eastthorpe-hall-day-spa-mirfield/ .)

I had high expectations for my visit due partly to my own fab experiences of Eastthorpe Hall, but also from reading in to the background of the Pottingshed Spa and discovering the awards they have won including ‘UK’s Most Inspirational Salon’ by Professional Beauty Magazine (June 2013.) They are also shortlisted for the prestigious ‘Best British Salon’ in the Professional Beauty Awards 2014, which I am sure they will win!

The Pottingshed Spa has been open for nearly three years and The Shedhead Hair Spa is a new addition to the site ( open for just six weeks), and really compliments the Pottingshed. It is great to be able to have a blow dry and come out with great skin and great looking hair now too!

The Pottingshed Spa offers a wealth of treatments including facials, massages, waxing, tinting, tanning, HD brows, gel nails, exfoliation treatments, semi permanent lashes and a number of treatments specifically for men. They offer several  ‘Signature’ treatments too which are their most popular treatments. I was booked in for the ‘Signature Full Body Massage’, Paraffin hand wax and the Potting Shed Organic Standard Pedicure.  I was amazed to see when I entered the salon, that it is actually like a little potting shed. It is lit up with sparkly little fairy lights and is full of plant pots and gnomes. Everything about the salon has been so well thought out and the theme works brilliantly. When I spoke to one of the therapists about the design, she told me that the owner Sam wanted the spa to be comfortable and homely and not clinical and cold like some other salons and it is definitely very warm and welcoming. I also loved that you can buy a lot of the little ornaments that are displayed in and around the salon. Another great touch was that the therapist’s wear jeans and striped tops rather than the standard therapist uniform which again makes for a really relaxed (but still professional) atmosphere. The therapists were also wearing a cheeky Christmas jumper which I was told is standard issue for Christmas!!

I was greeted by my therapist who talked me through my treatments for the afternoon and asked me to fill in a health card to ensure all the treatments were suitable. I was then taken in to a treatment room to have my Signature Full Body Massage. Words cannot describe how good this massage actually was. It was an hour of pure bliss! Amazingly, I was never a big fan of massages beforehand and they were never a treatment I would choose. That has now changed and if I could, I would have one every week! As you would expect from this spa there are little special touches you don’t expect such as their amazing heated bed. During the massage the bed is heated throughout the treatment which I have never experienced before and I can tell you I did not want to get out at the end of the treatment!  The therapist performed an amazing massage with just the right amount of pressure ( she asked me about this before the treatment) and I was left feeling really relaxed at the end of it. I cannot recommend this treatment highly enough.

After this I was given time to come round, get dressed and then I was ready for the next treatment. Next on the agenda was the paraffin hand wax. I got to dip my hands in to a bowl of warm wax, and my hands were then wrapped up so the wax could perform its magic and transform my wizened dry hands in to something more acceptable! Whilst the wax was working, the therapist started on my feet. Again she had a big job on her hands…. my feet are awful.

I was seated in a big comfy armchair with a hot water bottle (again, it’s the little extra touches which make it) and the therapist worked her magic on my feet. She used a combination of Pinks Boutique skin care products and Essie nail polishes. I chose a lovely Essie colour ‘Sable Collar’ for my toes. I was offered a drink of their ‘signature’ Lemon, Ginger & Honey tea, which tasted amazing. I asked for the recipe but they are not allowed to reveal it to anyone… it’s worth going just to try the tea! My feet were buffed and polished to perfection and the wax was removed from my hands, leaving my skin visibly rejuvenated.

All in all it was a truly amazing afternoon, the treatments are wonderful and my therapist was really friendly. To cope with the high demand at the spa they are in the midst of opening two new treatment rooms in Shedhead which will be finished soon.

Next up was my visit to Shedhead Spa, the hair salon. This has only recently opened but compliments the beauty spa so well. Again the salon is really warm and welcoming and full of twinkly fairy lights.

Shedhead have their own range of hair products, and a ‘Blue Shampoo’ was used  to get rid of brassy tones which I bought, as it was so good at brightening my hair ( my friends who read this know about my obsession with ‘blue’ shampoos, I have tried many and this is really good).

Shedhead offer all the normal services you would expect from a good salon such as cutting, colouring etc and they also offer four different types of ‘Blow Dry’. The idea I love is the ‘Go Blow’ which is a shampoo and blow dry perfect for when you are short on time, such as lunch hours but when you need your hair doing for an event after work.

The Pottingshed Spa is also in the middle of developing their own brand of facial skin care products to be used in their treatments, which will complement the hair care range they already have and I can’t wait to try those.

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to both venues and they are both definitely just that little bit more than a spa/salon, the little touches within both make the difference between a great visit, to a truly exceptional experience….. definitely worth visiting and having a treatment (or two!)
