Summer Special: Self Tanning Products

Todays summer special is all about self tanning products, a beauty essential for summer in my opinion! I have been sent an array of self tanning products to test and these are my pick of the best. There is a mixture of gradual tans, organic self tans and one specifically for the face.

Sunkissed Gradual Self Tan (& Mitt)

Simple Kind to Skin + Sunkissed Moisture Cream

Lavera Self Tanning Lotion – Body

TanOrganic Self Tanning Oil

Fake Bake Flawless Self Tan Liquid

Sunkissed Gradual Self Tan (Medium) & Mitt

This gradual tanning lotion from Sunkissed is a really skin softening consistency. It contains vitamin E and Shea Butter to moisturise the skin. I used the medium shade which was perfect for me as I have a medium skin tone and I only had to use one application of this to get the shade I like. I applied using the fabulous mitt to ensure I got even coverage and the next day I was left with a really golden shade on my skin. What I also love about this self tan is the bottle has a little ‘gizmo’ at the top to ensure the cream comes out really evenly and doesn’t squirt out everywhere like others I have tried in the past. There is also a lighter version of the gradual self tan for paler skin types, which you can build up to get the shade you like. The Sunkissed Gradual Self Tan currently retails at £4.99 an absolute bargain for a great product. It is available online at Sunkissed and also at Superdrug.

Simple Kind to Skin + Sunkissed Moisture Cream

This moisturiser for the face is a great way to build a gradual natural summer look. As with all Simple products, it doesn’t contain any perfume or harsh ingredients making it perfect for sensitive skin types. This formula enables users to get a subtle glow with regular use without streaking or a strong ‘orange’ tan colour. I tried the light gradual tan version and it gave my skin a glow after use a couple of times. I would say it is perfect for lighter skin types as the colour is very natural. It leaves skin feeling really soft after use and is also a great base for makeup. A perfect product for priming winter skin ready for summer!

Lavera Self – Tanning Lotion – Body

Next up this self tanning body lotion from German organic skincare brand Lavera. This is a really gentle self tanning formula and smells gorgeous on application. The tanning ingredients are derived from sugar and rapeseed oil and it also contains organic sunflower oil, aloe vera and macadamia nut oil. Lavera is a brand I haven’t tried before but I have read about a number of their products in the press recently. I really liked this formulation as it was a real skin softener. The results of using this product are a really subtle sunkissed glow. It gave a really natural colour after one application and I applied another coat for a stronger colour as I prefer to be a little bit darker. This is another great product for dry/sensitive skin types like mine.

Lavera Self Tanning Lotion RRP £13.50, available at Lavera and Holland & Barrett.

TanOrganic Self – Tanning Oil – I was very keen to try this product as its’ the world’s first organically certified sunless tanning brand. Much has been written in the press about this oil, only last weekend it was featured in YOU magazine in their ‘Sunshine Superstar’ feature having been picked as one to try after being rigorously tested by the Beauty Bible testing panels. It has won several awards already, including ‘Best Tan’ in the Irish Times and was created by beauty therapist Noelle O’Connor. It is the first time I have tried an oil based self tan and I was a bit wary about how it would turn out. However, there was no need, it applies like a dream, being oil based means it literally glides across (prepped and scrubbed) skin. It also has less of a self tan small than many others. Skin feels really nourished after use and because it isn’t water based it isn’t as drying making it perfect for dry/sensitive skin types. It is also suitable for use on the face. The next day I was left with a wonderful golden tan and no orange marks around knees or elbows. The colour is quite subtle and is perfect for people with paler skin types too. My friend borrowed to use as she was attending a wedding. She wanted a glow rather than a full on tan and raved about the results after use. I used a couple of times to achieve the colour I wanted and I was really pleased with the shade and also how soft it left my skin. I will definitely be repurchasing this once it’s gone! TanOrganic is currently available at Feel Unique for £24.99.

Fake Bake Flawless Self Tan Liquid

Fake Bake Flawless Self Tan has been developed to deliver a flawless golden tan and it does! This self tan is tinted so once applied using the mitt supplied you get a gorgeous golden colour and of course you can see exactly where you are applying the tan which is useful. I leave on overnight and the colour next day is a deep golden tan. I like this self tan for when I have a night out as the colour is a bit deeper than the others. It also has the signature Fake Bake tropical scent which I love. Available at TK Maxx.
